Explanation and Caveats
Curiosity and about 30 minutes a day required. This reading plan covers the entire Bible in a year, but only the New Testament passages are in chronological order. The Old Testament chapters are all over the place, as they fit in some way with the NT passages. This plan would probably be enjoyed more by people who have previously read through the Bible in a more consecutive way and have some context to begin with. You can find different plans for a more linear reading over on the right.
~ Four or Five Chapters a Day, Six Days a Week ~
It’s six days a week of four to five chapters per day (occasionally fewer). All the Old Testament (OT) passages relate in some way to the New Testament (NT) reading of the day. Sometimes they include the source of direct quotes, other times they provide background, context, depth, or contrast. It’s like a daily Bible study on a NT passage, with support from the OT. You can just explore and enjoy each passage for itself, or look for how each OT passage relates to the NT passage of the day. There are sometimes a few overlapping NT verses for context.
~ Not for Everyone ~
If you are new to the Bible or pressed for time, try just reading the first passage listed for each day (NT), or maybe also any Psalms or Proverbs listed. You can get to the other stuff some other time (probably better to read in a more direct order the first time).
If you are averse to flipping around to different passages duing one reading session, this is probably not the reading plan for you (try a different plan).
~ Time Off to Reflect/Connect on Sundays ~
On Sundays no reading is assigned, so you can use that day to catch up or reflect, pray, ponder and connect with other readers to share favorite passages or insights from the week. Ask a friend or two to read along with you in 2018 so you can keep each other accountable to finish! A weekly planned check-in can help to achieve your goal.
~ Ends Early ~
The read-through of the entire Bible ends already on December 6th, before the busy end-of-year holiday time arrives. Readings from December 7th onwards are optional Advent/Christmas/New Year meditation verses, which are duplicates from earlier in the year.
